Analytical meaning

AI Integration with Data Warehouses

Preserve warehouse measures, grain, freshness and access when connecting AI, with a worked join error and a practical query-evidence card.

Connecting AI to a data warehouse is an exercise in preserving analytical meaning. The assistant needs more than a SQL connection: it needs the correct grain, definitions, access scope, freshness and evidence behind an answer. A query can run successfully and still produce a commercially wrong result.

This guide is for data-platform owners and analytics leads building an enterprise question-answering or analytical-assistance feature. It treats the warehouse as an analytical source with explicit limitations, not as automatic proof of current operational state. The worked example shows how a plausible join turns SAR 160 of order-line value into SAR 480.

Decide which questions the warehouse can answer responsibly

Start with a small question catalogue and the decisions the answers support. “What was the value of completed orders in the accepted reporting period?” requires a different contract from “Can we promise this item to a customer now?” The first may use a certified analytical view; the second may need a current operational service and transaction controls.

Record the source system, refresh method, expected delay and actual freshness evidence for each dataset. An overnight load can support historical analysis while being unsuitable for an immediate stock or payment decision. The assistant should state the relevant as-of time when freshness matters, and decline to imply a current state it cannot establish.

Do not add operational writes to a warehouse assistant merely because the query was persuasive. A proposed business action needs a separate supported destination operation, authority and acknowledgement. Integration versus an API-only approach explains the surrounding delivery responsibilities, while API-first integration helps define a separate execution boundary when one is required.

A worked query failure: the join changes the grain

Consider an illustrative order with two order lines valued at SAR 100 and SAR 60. A delivery-events table contains three events for that order. Joining the two tables on order identifier alone produces six rows: each line appears once for each event. Summing the line value after that join yields (100 + 60) × 3 = SAR 480, although the correct order-line total remains SAR 160.

The SQL is syntactically valid. The rows may all be authorised. The assistant can even write a convincing explanation. The failure is that the query combined different grains without preserving the intended measure. A model confidence score or a successful database response will not identify that business error reliably.

The remedy depends on the question. If the question asks for order value, aggregate the order-line measure at the intended grain and avoid multiplying it by events. If it asks about delivery history, keep the events as events and do not present repeated line amounts as additional sales. If a relationship genuinely requires allocation, define the allocation rule with the data owner rather than inventing one in SQL.

Turn this example into an acceptance case with known expected values. Include an order with no events, one with multiple events and a corrected event. The test should examine both the numeric result and the explanation of the population, exclusions and time basis. This catches a class of errors that a clean one-row demonstration misses.

Create a query-evidence card for every material answer

Proposed query-evidence card
FieldWhat it should establishIllustrative entry
Business definitionThe accepted meaning of the measure and included records.Order-line value before delivery-event joins.
GrainWhat one source row and one result row represent.Source: one order line; result: one order.
Time basisRelevant business date, time zone and freshness.Reporting date plus last successful source refresh.
Access contextThe user or role scope applied to the result.Permitted subsidiary and approved analytical view.
Query referenceA retrievable version of the executed query and parameters.Controlled query ID linked to the answer.
ChecksReconciliation, row-count or measure tests performed.Order total reconciles to SAR 160 in the known case.
Permitted useWhat the answer supports and what needs fresher authority.Historical review; not a commitment of available inventory.

The card need not expose sensitive SQL or internal table names to every reader. Store detailed evidence in an authorised support view and show the user the relevant definition, period and limitations. A source link to a dashboard is insufficient if the assistant used different filters or a different refresh snapshot.

Use curated semantic surfaces before broad SQL generation

Begin with approved views, measures and relationships for the question catalogue. A semantic layer may help express these rules, but it still needs owners and tests. Define synonyms in Arabic and English, such as the distinction between booked value, invoiced value and collected cash. Those words should map to agreed definitions, not to whichever column name looks nearest.

Restrict the objects and query operations the assistant may use. Validate generated queries before execution, bound result size and compute use, and prevent access to administrative or external-data functions outside the task. A “SELECT-only” rule reduces some mutation risk but does not by itself prevent sensitive reads or expensive queries.

For difficult questions, offer a reviewed query rather than pretending every request can be safely answered automatically. The user should see when a definition is missing or conflicting. That response creates useful work for the data owner and avoids converting a governance gap into a precise-looking number.

Carry access controls into results, exports and caches

Use the warehouse's supported identity and policy mechanisms for the selected platform. For example, Snowflake's row-access-policy documentation describes query-time row visibility and notes that row policies do not themselves prohibit inserts or changes to visible rows. Confirm feature eligibility and the actual configuration; a policy label does not establish all permissions required by your design.

A central service identity with broad visibility can undermine the intended user boundary if every question runs under its unrestricted scope. Decide how user context is represented and enforced. Test a permitted question and the same question from a person who should not see the underlying subsidiary, department or customer population.

Then follow the result beyond the warehouse. A generated answer, downloaded file, embedding or cached summary may become a separate copy. Warehouse query controls do not automatically protect those copies. Access-control design and AI caching strategies should preserve the relevant identity, scope and freshness conditions across the whole answer path.

Make freshness and correction visible

Distinguish the time a source event occurred, the time it was ingested and the time the analytical model was refreshed. These can differ materially. A dashboard updated this morning may still include a source feed that last succeeded two days ago. Use source-level freshness evidence rather than a generic interface timestamp.

Define how late-arriving records and corrections affect previous answers. If a source corrects an order amount, identify whether a cached result must be invalidated and whether a material earlier report needs review. A new answer should not silently combine an old measure snapshot with new event data that uses different assumptions.

For Saudi organisations, document the reporting time zone and calendar interpretation explicitly. Arabic date wording, Gregorian dates and other business-calendar references can be ambiguous in natural-language questions. Clarify the intended period before executing a consequential comparison. The language of the question does not determine the correct reporting calendar automatically.

Separate analytical quality from model fluency

Use a reference set of questions with approved answers and query logic. Include joins at different grains, missing source data, access-denied cases, currency differences and periods with no records. Evaluate the selected definition, records included, numeric result, source evidence and explanation separately. A correct number with a misleading population description still needs correction.

Do not compare a new assistant only with another model. Compare it with a verified business result. Where the reference itself is disputed, resolve the definition with the data owner and preserve the decision. Integration testing can connect these cases to release acceptance and prevent a prompt change from silently altering analytical meaning.

Track the query cost and response time for representative workloads, but avoid making performance the sole release gate. A fast answer that multiplies revenue by a join is worse for decision-making than a slower answer that asks for the correct definition. Apply budgets appropriate to the workload and review queries that repeatedly exceed them.

Hand over the question catalogue and evidence, not just credentials

The delivery pack should include certified views or measures, glossary ownership, lineage, freshness checks, permission tests, query examples and known unsupported questions. Name who investigates a disagreement between the AI answer and an existing report. That owner needs access to the actual query and data snapshot references, not only the conversation text.

Trusted Data's Saudi data-engineering overview provides related commercial context for preparing governed analytical foundations. The practical acceptance test remains whether your answer preserves the correct measure, scope and evidence.

For AI integration and delivery with OpenForAI, bring several real business questions, masked table relationships, an agreed reference answer and the source refresh schedule. Enquire about AI integration with a data warehouse around that analytical contract so that the project can prove trustworthy answers before expanding its query scope.

FAQ

Your questions, answered.

Can a read-only warehouse AI assistant still expose sensitive data?

Yes. Read-only access prevents some changes but does not establish which records or fields a requester may see. Enforce the relevant identity and data policies, restrict the query surface and test denied populations. Follow results into exports, caches and generated summaries, where the original warehouse controls may no longer apply automatically.

Why can a valid AI-generated SQL query return an inflated total?

It may join tables at different grains and repeat a measure. In the illustrative example, two order lines joined to three delivery events multiply the line total by three. Define the intended grain and aggregation with the data owner, then test known cases. SQL syntax and a successful response do not establish analytical correctness.

Should a warehouse AI answer be used to promise live stock availability?

Only if the specific data contract establishes the freshness and operational meaning required for that decision. A reporting warehouse may contain delayed or transformed information. Where a live commitment is needed, use a supported operational service with the relevant authority and transaction controls. Clearly label analytical answers with their effective time and permitted use.

What evidence should accompany an AI warehouse answer?

Retain the accepted business definition, grain, included records, time basis, access context, executed query reference and relevant reconciliation checks. Show the user the parts needed to interpret the answer while protecting sensitive implementation detail. A generic source link is insufficient if the assistant used different filters or a different data snapshot.

How should Arabic business questions map to warehouse measures?

Use an owner-approved bilingual glossary that distinguishes measures with similar everyday names, such as invoiced value and collected cash. Clarify ambiguous periods, calendars and organisational scope. The model can interpret wording, but the selected measure and filters must follow the accepted definitions. Test Arabic and mixed-language questions against the same verified business outcomes.

Do warehouse row-access policies automatically protect cached AI summaries?

No automatic equivalence should be assumed. A cached summary is a separate result whose permitted audience and validity must be enforced by the application. Bind reuse to the appropriate identity, scope, source freshness and policy context. Invalidate or restrict results when those conditions change, and test whether another user can retrieve an answer they could not query directly.
