Instrumentation comparison

AgentOps vs LangSmith

Choose between AgentOps.ai and LangSmith by testing task reconstruction, asynchronous coverage and usable investigation evidence.

This page compares the AgentOps.ai product with LangSmith. AgentOps is also the name of an operating discipline; adopting either product does not establish that discipline by itself. For its broader meaning, use What is AgentOps?. The product choice here concerns how engineers capture, reconstruct and investigate agent execution.

A useful decision starts with a trace acceptance test. Both candidates must receive the same representative workload, expose the evidence your operators need and behave acceptably when telemetry cannot be delivered. A short installation example can demonstrate connectivity while leaving asynchronous tasks, custom tools and interrupted runs unobserved.

Establish the product and deployment boundaries

The current AgentOps repository documents agent execution graphs, model-cost tracking and framework integrations. Its root licence is MIT, but the application directory carries Elastic License 2.0, despite the root README describing the app as MIT. The application instructions include self-hosting. Confirm the applicable component and release terms before deployment or a managed-service offering; do not classify the entire application from the repository badge alone.

LangSmith documents offline and online evaluation workflows alongside its tracing ecosystem. Its self-hosted deployment is commercially licensed for enterprise use. Compare the exact offered product, version and deployment arrangement. Repository availability, hosted-plan entitlements and support obligations are separate questions for either candidate.

Do not infer a feature's absence merely because it is absent from a summary table. Ask the supplier or implementation team to demonstrate the required workflow with current documentation. Equally, do not accept a broad claim such as “supports your framework” as evidence that every callback, task queue or custom execution boundary is captured correctly.

Define the trace you need before installing an SDK

Write a small expected-event specification. It should identify the business task, execution attempts, model interactions, tool requests, external acknowledgements, human decisions and final disposition. A model's request to call a tool is a different event from the tool actually running. A receiving system acknowledging a request may still differ from confirming the intended business effect.

For each event, specify its parent or causal relationship, expected attributes and permissible content. Give operators an evidence question, such as “Which source revision produced the rejected catalogue entry?” This is more testable than “the dashboard must show every step”. The specification also reveals what the application itself must emit, regardless of the SDK selected.

Use task tracing to distinguish durable task identity from trace and span identifiers. If the service continues after a worker restart, an investigation must connect the attempts without pretending that the restarted process is the original execution. If a platform requires a custom field or link for that relationship, document and test the mapping.

Illustrative trace test: an audio-archive indexing agent

Consider a hypothetical agent preparing an internal index entry for recording A-73. It retrieves descriptive metadata and a transcript in parallel, proposes a category, then waits for an archivist to resolve a conflicting date. The archivist rejects the first draft, supplies the authoritative date and accepts the corrected entry. The agent writes only after that approval, using a test catalogue during evaluation.

The test pack contains no real private recording. Synthetic text is enough to exercise the event relationships. Include a delayed transcript response, one failed metadata lookup, a resumed review and a write whose acknowledgement is deliberately withheld. The expected final state of that last case is unresolved until reconciliation, not automatically failed or safely repeatable.

In each platform, ask an engineer who did not build the integration to identify the first wrong assumption and the exact evidence available when the category was proposed. Then ask a second operator to determine whether the catalogue write is confirmed. Record whether they can answer independently and which application events are missing.

Separate automatic coverage from deliberate instrumentation

Trace acceptance checklist for AgentOps.ai and LangSmith
BoundaryEvidence requiredFailure to detect
Task entryTask identifier, version and accepted input referenceSeveral customer tasks merged into one session
Parallel readsDistinct tool attempts with correct causal associationCompletion order mistaken for dependency order
Model proposalModel and instruction versions with permitted contextA fluent proposal mistaken for a completed action
Human reviewReview request, authorised disposition and resumed attemptWaiting time omitted from the task history
Catalogue writeRequest reference and separately confirmed resultA timeout treated as proof that no write occurred
Telemetry exportVisible delivery failure or loss indicatorMissing events presented as a complete run

Run the checklist first with the recommended automatic integration. Then add only the custom instrumentation needed to close identified gaps. Record that work as part of ownership: who maintains it, which changes can break it and how the test will detect breakage. A platform with fewer initial configuration steps can still require significant custom work for business evidence.

Inspect duplicate spans as well as missing spans. Enabling several overlapping instrumentations can represent one model call more than once. That can distort duration, call counts and cost attribution. Keep the original provider request reference where safe and supported, and establish a reconciliation rule rather than removing duplicates by visual guesswork.

Test the investigation experience under realistic constraints

Use role-appropriate access. A developer may see detailed synthetic payloads; an operations user may need task status and failure categories without raw content. Confirm that an investigation remains possible after content minimisation. If an operator must obtain administrator access for every incident, the proposed workflow has an operating cost and a separation-of-duties concern.

Search for the same task by its durable identifier, release, failed tool and review outcome. Check whether queries return the correct attempts rather than just text matches in a response. Inspect time zones and timestamp precision when comparing application records with external confirmations. A misleading timeline can send investigators towards the wrong cause even when every individual event is present.

For the corrected archive entry, export the relevant trace and review record. Another authorised person should be able to understand the evidence without relying on an undocumented dashboard annotation. This is especially important when a support team, auditor or replacement supplier will inherit the service later.

Connect tracing to evaluation without confusing their purposes

A trace describes observed execution. An evaluation judges a defined property of that execution or result. The rejected date in the archive example becomes useful evaluation material only after someone establishes the authoritative source and expected disposition. Do not use the agent's own final answer as both prediction and reference.

Compare the route from that incident to a reusable test. Record how the input is sanitised, how the expectation is stored and how the corrected application is rerun. LangSmith's documented evaluation workflows make this an explicit trial area; for AgentOps.ai, demonstrate the exact evaluation or external integration arrangement proposed for your deployment. Lack of a demonstration is an unresolved requirement, not proof of a permanent product limitation.

If evaluation is already handled elsewhere, test the connection instead of requiring a second complete evaluation system. Preserve task, run, application and evaluator versions. LLM observability versus agent observability explains why a good score on the model response alone cannot confirm the catalogue write or the review decision.

Check data handling at capture and export

LangSmith documents input, output and metadata masking controls. Verify the configured scope rather than assuming one switch covers every nested tool payload. For either candidate, place a distinctive synthetic secret in the root input, child-tool argument, exception message and metadata. Inspect captured and exported records to establish where the value survives.

Decide which content must never leave the application, which may reach an internal collector and which may reach the observability backend. These are different trust boundaries. A server-side display restriction cannot undo data already sent to an unauthorised destination. The telemetry design guide develops a field-level contract for that decision.

Make deployment ownership part of the choice

For self-hosting, require a named operator for updates, storage growth, backups, restoration, identity configuration and security patches. Test recovery of a representative investigation, not simply whether the login page returns. Published source code can support inspection and modification within the applicable component terms; it does not supply a staffed operating service.

For a hosted arrangement, ask for the actual processing locations, retention, export capabilities and incident responsibilities applicable to your contract. Neither a vendor name nor a framework integration establishes Saudi hosting. Compare billing with the same event volume and content policy, because capturing large tool payloads can change the operating envelope considerably.

A defensible choice names the successful trace tests, residual instrumentation work, deployment responsibilities and reasons the alternative was less suitable for this workload. Keep the test pack so the decision can be checked after an SDK or framework upgrade. AgentOps.ai versus Langfuse provides a different comparison focused on the trace-to-evaluation operating loop.

Discuss a trace acceptance test for your agent stack with a masked execution graph and a list of questions operators currently cannot answer. AgentOps operating support should be scoped around those evidence gaps and responsibilities, with the specific deliverables agreed before implementation.

FAQ

Your questions, answered.

Does AgentOps in this comparison mean the operating discipline or AgentOps.ai?

It means the AgentOps.ai software product. The operating discipline is broader and includes ownership, permissions, evaluation, recovery and continuing service improvement. Both AgentOps.ai and LangSmith can supply parts of the evidence used by that discipline. Neither product automatically decides what business outcome is acceptable or who may authorise an external action.

How should buyers check AgentOps.ai self-hosting and licence rights?

Inspect the exact application component and release. The repository root carries MIT, while the application directory carries ELv2 despite the root README’s description. Self-hosting instructions are available, but they do not resolve every permitted-use question. Obtain component-specific confirmation for the planned arrangement, especially a hosted or managed service, and assess support and operating responsibilities separately.

How do we test whether automatic agent instrumentation is complete?

Create an expected-event map covering task entry, parallel work, custom tools, model calls, human decisions, retries and final state. Run known failure cases and compare captured events with the map. Check duplicates as well as omissions. Include a worker restart and exporter interruption, because a successful single-process demonstration does not exercise those boundaries.

Can we compare the tools without moving real customer data?

Yes. Use synthetic records that reproduce the structure, size, languages and sensitive-field locations of the intended workload. Introduce distinctive test values to check masking and export. Synthetic testing does not prove every production pattern is covered, so document its limits and use an approved, minimised validation stage before handling live data.

Should a trace replay be allowed to repeat external writes?

Treat visual reconstruction and executable replay as different activities. A reconstruction helps explain recorded events; an executable replay may call tools again. Use isolated targets or explicit replay controls, and reconcile previously uncertain actions before retrying them. Observability software does not make a repeated business action harmless.

What should trigger a new AgentOps.ai versus LangSmith evaluation?

Revisit the decision when the framework, language runtime, tool architecture, data boundary or operating team changes materially. An SDK upgrade can also alter coverage or field meanings. Reuse the trace acceptance pack and compare the evidence, rather than repeating only the quickstart. Keep the product edition and deployment arrangement in the decision record.
